How feet and yards are converted
A yard is exactly three feet. Length, area and volume use different conversion factors.
yards = feet ÷ 3; feet = yards × 3; metres = feet × 0.3048.
- Divide feet by 3 to find yards. Multiply yards by 3 to find feet.
- For mixed units, take out whole yards. The remaining length is feet.
- Multiply feet by 0.3048 to find metres. These unit definitions are exact before rounding.
- For square feet, divide by 9. For cubic feet, divide by 27. Do not use the length factor for area or volume.
Worked example: 10 ft ÷ 3 = 3.3333 yd. That is 3 yd 1 ft, or 3.048 m.
