How it works
Matched systems: pints = gallons × 8; gallons = pints ÷ 8. Mixed systems: amount × source volume in ml ÷ destination volume in ml.
- Choose the direction and enter an amount.
- Choose the gallon system and matching or explicit pints.
- Read the converted volume and check the system labels.
Worked example: 1 US gallon is exactly 8 US liquid pints, or 3.785411784 litres. The same US gallon is about 6.6614 imperial pints. In matching systems, 2.375 gallons is 2 gal 3 pt.
Common gallon amounts
| Gallons | US gal in US pt | Imperial gal in imperial pt | US gal in imperial pt | Imperial gal in US pt |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 | 4 | 4 | 3.3307 | 4.8038 |
| 1 | 8 | 8 | 6.6614 | 9.6076 |
| 2 | 16 | 16 | 13.3228 | 19.2152 |
| 3 | 24 | 24 | 19.9842 | 28.8228 |
| 5 | 40 | 40 | 33.307 | 48.038 |
| 10 | 80 | 80 | 66.6139 | 96.076 |

Matched systems have exactly 8 pints per gallon. Cross-system figures are rounded to four decimal places.
Things to consider
- Check whether the label uses US or imperial gallons.
- Keep both systems matched for a factor of 8.
- Use volume, not weight, for milk and brewing liquids.
- Paint coverage depends on surface and coat thickness.
- Brewing recipes can use different gallon systems.
Frequently asked questions
How many pints are in a gallon?
There are exactly 8 US liquid pints in a US gallon and 8 imperial pints in an imperial gallon. This factor applies only when systems match. A US gallon holds about 6.6614 imperial pints; an imperial gallon holds about 9.6076 US liquid pints.
What is the difference between US and imperial gallons and pints?
A US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 L and a US liquid pint is 473.176473 ml. An imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 L and an imperial pint is 568.26125 ml. Each gallon holds 8 of its own pints, but the imperial units are about 20% larger.
Why is a UK pint of beer bigger than a US pint?
A UK pint usually means the imperial pint of 568.26125 ml, while a US liquid pint is 473.176473 ml. They come from different measurement standards. Check the stated serving size because beer serving sizes and naming rules vary.
Are US dry pints included?
No. A US dry pint is a different volume unit, about 550.6105 ml. This calculator uses only US liquid and imperial measures. Do not use its US pint result for a dry-pint label.
How many pints are in half a gallon?
Half a US gallon is 4 US liquid pints. Half an imperial gallon is 4 imperial pints. If you mix systems, convert through the exact volumes instead of multiplying by 8.
Can I use this for milk, paint or brewing?
Yes, when you know the measurement systems on the container or recipe. The calculation converts liquid volume only, not mass or paint coverage. The Cups to Pints Converter, Quarts to Gallons Converter and Quarts to Cups Converter cover smaller containers and recipe measures.
