How micrograms to milligrams are calculated
A milligram is a thousand micrograms, so the conversion is a division or a multiplication by one thousand.
milligrams = micrograms ÷ 1,000 (1 mg = 1,000 mcg)
- The prefix micro- means one millionth of a gram and milli- means one thousandth, so one milligram is exactly 1,000 micrograms.
- Divide your micrograms by 1,000 for milligrams, or multiply your milligrams by 1,000 to go back.
- 500 mcg is 0.5 mg, and 2,500 mcg is 2.5 mg.
- mcg, µg and ug are the same unit. Labels write mcg so a misread µ is never taken for an m.
Worked example — A 400 mcg folic acid tablet is 400 ÷ 1,000 = 0.4 mg, which is 0.0004 grams.
Common amounts converted
| Micrograms | Milligrams | Grams | Where you often see it |

| 1 mcg | 0.001 mg | 0.000001 g | — |
| 25 mcg | 0.025 mg | 0.000025 g | Vitamin D tablet |
| 100 mcg | 0.1 mg | 0.0001 g | Chromium supplement |
| 150 mcg | 0.15 mg | 0.00015 g | Iodine in a multivitamin |
| 400 mcg | 0.4 mg | 0.0004 g | Folic acid tablet |
| 500 mcg | 0.5 mg | 0.0005 g | Vitamin B12 supplement |
| 1,000 mcg | 1 mg | 0.001 g | Biotin tablet |
| 2,500 mcg | 2.5 mg | 0.0025 g | Biotin supplement |
| 5,000 mcg | 5 mg | 0.005 g | High-strength biotin |

Things to consider
- Check a label twice: 0.5 mg and 500 mcg are the same amount, but 5 mg is ten times bigger than 0.5 mg.
- mcg, µg and ug all mean micrograms — pharmacists write mcg so a µ is not mistaken for an m.
- You cannot weigh micrograms at home; a kitchen scale reads grams at best, so amounts this small come from labelled tablets or powders.
- If a prescription and a supplement disagree, compare both in milligrams before taking anything, and ask a pharmacist.
Frequently asked questions
How many micrograms is a milligram?
1,000. One microgram is 0.001 mg.
Is 500 mcg the same as 0.5 mg?
Yes. 500 ÷ 1,000 = 0.5 mg.
What is 1000 mcg in mg?
1 mg exactly.
Is mcg the same as µg?
Yes — both mean microgram. Labels and prescriptions use mcg so a µ is not misread as an m.
How many mcg is 0.05 mg?
50 mcg, because 0.05 × 1,000 = 50.
