Adult BMI screening

BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnosis. It doesn't distinguish muscle from fat or account for body shape, age, ethnicity, pregnancy or athletes. Speak to a health professional about your health.

BMI for men

Men typically carry more muscle, so BMI can overestimate fat in muscular men. The calculation and adult categories are the same for men and women. Waist measurement can add context: waist under half of height is a commonly cited general guide, not a diagnosis.

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². Informational healthy weight range = 18.5 to 24.9 × height (m)².

  • Enter your height, weight and adult age.
  • Divide weight in kilograms by height in metres squared.
  • Read the screening category and informational range with a health professional.

Worked example: At 180 cm and 80 kg, BMI = 80 ÷ 1.8² = 24.7. This falls in the healthy weight category. The informational range at this height is 59.9 to 80.7 kg.

Things to consider

  • BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat.
  • The range is information, not a personal target.
  • Pregnancy and athletic builds need other assessments.
  • Some health bodies may use lower cut-offs, such as 23 and 27.5, for people of Asian descent.
  • The Calorie Deficit Calculator has separate adult safety limits; BMI alone is not a reason to change how you eat.

Frequently asked questions

How is BMI calculated?

Divide weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. For imperial measurements, convert pounds to kilograms and feet plus inches to metres first. For 180 cm and 80 kg, 80 ÷ 1.8² = 24.7.

Is BMI different for men and women?

No. Adult men and women use the same formula and categories. Men typically carry more muscle, so BMI may overestimate fat in muscular men. Waist measurement is a useful extra check. Waist under half of height is a commonly cited general guide, not a diagnosis.

What is a healthy BMI?

The WHO adult healthy weight category starts at 18.5 and ends below 25, commonly written as 18.5 to 24.9. This is a screening range, not a guarantee of health. Some health bodies may use lower cut-offs, such as 23 and 27.5, for people of Asian descent.

What are the limits of BMI?

BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat or account for body shape, age, ethnicity, pregnancy or athletes. It cannot diagnose health conditions. Speak to a health professional for an assessment that considers your circumstances.

How is BMI used for older adults?

The formula stays the same, but muscle loss, frailty and changes in body composition can affect its meaning. A health professional may consider strength, nutrition and other measures rather than relying on standard categories alone.

Can children use this BMI calculator?

This page is for adults aged 18 and over. Children and teens need age- and sex-specific BMI percentile charts, not adult categories. Please see a doctor or your local health service.

Is BMI the same as body fat?

No. BMI relates weight to height; it does not measure body-fat percentage or fat distribution. Waist measurements and suitable clinical assessments can add information, especially for muscular people.
