How military time is converted
The minutes stay the same. Only the hour and the am or pm label change.
After noon: 12-hour hour = 24-hour hour − 12. For p.m. hours 1 to 11: 24-hour hour = 12-hour hour + 12.
- For hours 13 to 23, subtract 12 and use p.m. Hours 01 to 11 use a.m.
- Hour 00 is 12 a.m. and hour 12 is 12 p.m. At minute 00, these are midnight and noon.
- To convert back, add 12 to p.m. hours 1 to 11. Change 12 a.m. to 00 and keep 12 p.m. as 12.
- Keep the minutes and write the military time as four digits, including any leading zero.
Worked example: 1430 has hour 14 and minute 30. 14 − 12 = 2, so 1430 is 2:30 p.m., spoken as fourteen thirty hours.
